David Shipley
After training in electrical and electronic engineering, Shipley spent the early part of his career working in the oil & gas and nuclear industries, mainly in the consulting sector, managing turnkey projects.

Whilst working for a system builder in 1990, he was asked to manage a project to design and build driver’s desks for an electric multiple unit (EMU) project and thus came his entry to the railway industry, a career path he has followed ever since.

In 1991 Shipley joined Hunslet TPL and was part of the successful Class 323 EMU project team. Towards the end of this project, he managed the maintenance manuals production for the units and was disappointed by the quality of suppliers in this sector.

This inspired him to start his own business in this field, and he grew this business, successfully completing suites of manuals for a number of new build projects, including the KTM Berhad Malaysian EMU, Irish Enterprise trains and the British Rail Central Locking project. In 1997 the business became sole manuals supplier to British Nuclear Fuels and Shipley took the opportunity to sell, as he had a desire to concentrate his energies within the railway industry.

He then joined INBIS Group to establish and develop a railway business, and quickly identified and attacked a niche market to supply turnkey vehicle interior systems, focusing mainly on catering systems. INBIS was subsequently successful in delivering projects for Turbostar, Pendolino, Adelante and Voyager, firmly establishing INBIS as a force in the railway industry.

As INBIS developed, Shipley felt a desire to return to his roots in the consulting sector, and after spending some time advising Bulgarian State Railways on various matters (where he met his wife Juliana), he joined Interfleet Technology’s London team.

During his time with Interfleet, he advised several train operators on the practicality and feasibility of introducing new rolling suppliers into the UK market, including several Chinese manufacturers. This led him to develop close links with one particular manufacturer, leading to him being appointed as its European Representative. He now represents four large Chinese concerns.

Shipley is Managing Director of CSRE Limited, a company which supports Chinese rolling stock manufacturers that wish to enter the European market and Engineering Director of Sovereign Trains Limited, a small UK based rolling stock leasing company.
